RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Theory

Unravel the mysteries of astro navigation, using a sextant, ocean passage planning, worldwide meteorology and electronic navigation aids.

This course is for the blue water cruising sailors and is ideal for holders of the Yachtmaster Offshore certificate who are preparing for their first ocean passage.

Topics covered include:

  • The earth and the celestial sphere
  • Practical guide to use and care of sextant at sea
  • Meridian altitudes
  • Sun, star and other sights
  • Ocean passage planning

Before you come on the course your navigation skills should be at the standard of the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore shore based course.

If you are working towards your Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence, completion of this shore based course exempts you from the written exam.

The course is taught over six days with a number of exam papers at the end of the course.

RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Theory

This jam packed 6 day classroom based program is the perfect course for all aspiring or current ocean sailors to go on with its focus on sextant navigation, worldwide meteorology, ocean currents and ocean navigation.

You will learn how to maintain and use your sextant, calculating your position from the sun, stars and planets. You'll learn about great circle sailing, meteorology, passage planning, passage making and communications whilst on offshore.

Your Instructor - Jason Cummings

Jason has been sailing for more than 25 years and holds an RYA Yachtmaster Cruising Instructor Trainer qualification (Commercially Endorsed) and is a Yachtmaster Ocean and RYA Diesel Instructor. He also holds an Australian Sailing Safety and Sea Survival Instructor certificate. 

With over 50,000 nm logged, Jason has sailed across the Atlantic Ocean twice, the Pacific Ocean, the Bay of Biscay twice, the Tasman Sea twice (and singlehanded) and round New Zealand singlehanded.  He loves cruising to cold places with small populations and he enjoys spending time on boats with friends (both experienced and novice).

Jason wants everyone to have adventures, to enjoy the sea and the places it leads, and he wants everyone to be as safe as possible whilst they are enjoying their adventures.
